Medical Billing as a Profession: Know What You're Getting Into
Medical billing is a complex field with lots of small but important pieces. If you want to get into the field you need to know what small area you want to be in and what it takes to succeed in it.
There are many titles that come up when describing the general field of medical billing so we want to make sure you know what is out there and what to call it. Billing Specialist, Coding Specialist, Medical Collector, Patient Account Representative, Claims Analyst, Claims Processor, Electronic Claims Processor, Reimbursement Specialist, Claims Reviewer, Billing Coordinator and Claims Assistant Professional are just a handful of the names that a person in the field can be called and each one of them serves its own purpose.
If you want to get into any of these fields it is imperative that you know which area you want and why you would want it. Nothing is worse than thinking you are getting into something only to find out after you invest time and money that it is not at all what you thought. Research things carefully and know all you can. Learn what duties are expected of you in the position you seek. Find out the pay scale and make sure it is what you will be happy with. In addition, there are a number of different types of skill that employers want from their perspective employees. If you have them great, if not then you know what you will have to work on in order to be able to put your best foot forward.
Terminology is a very important thing. Specifically doctors use an abundance of words that average people do not know. To work in the billing area and deal with doctors you should know the procedures they do, the equipment they use and an assortment of other terms. If you seek schooling for your area which may be required, you will learn all of these things.
The key is to be informed. The more informed you are about the job and the expectations the better off you will be.
