Lisa Lopes: TLC’s Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Killed in Car Crash

Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, member of the Grammy-winning R&B trio TLC, was killed in a car crash in Honduras on Thursday at the age of 30.
It was reported that Lopes was traveling in a car outside the city of Jutiapa, located 150 miles north of the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, when the accident occurred. As reported by The Associated Press, Lopes was the only fatality. The other six passengers were taken to a local hospital. Police spokesman Luis Aguilar told the Associated Press, "The car rolled for reasons that we still don’t know, and that are being investigated." According to Honduran police, Lopes was driving when she apparently lost control of the car. It is not known whether or not Lopes was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Lopes formed TLC in 1992 with Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins. The Atlanta based trio released their debut album Oooooooh…On the TLC Tip, but hit it big with their multi-platinum-selling album CrazySexyCool featuring the hit "Waterfalls," for which they earned four MTV Video Music Awards. Lopes was dubbed the "crazy" one in the group and her reputation didn’t do much to diminish that title. In 1994, she pleaded guilty to arson after burning down former boyfriend and football star Andre Rison’s mansion one night after they had argued. She received a sentence of five years probation, a $10,000 fine and was sentenced to stay in a halfway house. The couple had an on again/off again relationship, but reportedly were still an item at the time of her death.

The trio released their last album, Fanmail, in 1999. In 2000, the members of TLC took a break to work on solo projects. Lopes worked on an album titled Supernova, which was supposed to be released last August, but that was shelved by Arista. There is no word on whether or not this album will be released posthumously. She also had signed on with Suge Knight’s Tha Row Records (formerly Death Row) and given herself a new moniker, N.I.N.A. (New Identity Not Applicable). Lopes was to return from Honduras and begin work on a new album with her fellow "TLC sisters," but instead she is being flown back to Atlanta pending funeral services.
