Beautiful Barcelona
Colorful Barcelona has become Spain’s second largest city in population and in size right after Madrid. The city has increased in popularity amongst tourists since the 1992 summer Olympics when major renovations and upgrades were performed to help the city become more modernized. Barcelona is of course famous for the inspiration it provided to Picasso’s colorful masterpieces as much as it is known for the legendary Spanish sunshine. Barcelona is quaint enough that tourists can travel on foot from the historic Roman quarter of the city to the modern section that drapes over the hills.
There are nine buildings in Barcelona that are recognized by UNESCO, four of which were designed by Antoni Gaudi. The gothic styled cathedral, has become the city’s most famous landmark, it is Gaudi’s unfinished, last work. Barcelona is not only a world leader in modernist architecture, it also has a steep tradition in Romanesque, Gothic and renaissance structures as well. Other buildings on UNESCO’s list include the Casa Vicens, the Palau Güell and the Casa Batlló.
The colorful surroundings and incredible weather notwithstanding, Barcelona has so much to offer travelers. The shopping choices are the best in Spain – with anything from world renowned designer boutiques and outlets to open air markets. The markets in particular are impressive, especially the food markets as they draw large crowds. Be sure to check out the Boqueria Market that operates in a hollow glass and iron complex, filled with the city’s freshest produce. Street-café life in Barcelona is hugely popular, so join the locals in the evening by sitting out in a square and just watch the world go by.
