UK Athletics has joined the trend in Britain for foreign coaches by appointing Michael Khmel, a Russian previously based in Australia, to work with the men's accident-prone 4x100 metres relay squad.

The team won the Olympic gold medal in Athens ahead of an Australian squad coached by Khmel who claimed silver but have a long record of otherwise underachieving.

The squad came in for severe criticism last month from the UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins when, representing England, they dropped the baton at the Commonwealth Games. Khmel, 39, has joined UK Athletics as a high-performance coach based at Loughborough.
