May/Walsh, Rogers/Scott win AVP Tempe Open
Misty May and Kerri Walsh continued their winning streak in front of packed stands at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe, Arizona, while Todd Rogers and Sean Scott won for the first time. Read on for the story.
Misty May and Kerri Walsh continued their winning streak in front of packed stands at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe.
The dynamic duo met Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs on center court in the finals and took home the victory 21-12, 21-19.
The victory extended the team's winning streak to 69 straight matches on both the AVP Nissan Series and internationally.
This is a familiar pairing as the two teams have faced each other in eight other AVP final matches.
On the men's side, the duo of Todd Rogers and Sean Scott defeated beach legend and three-time Olympian Karch Kiraly and his new partner Mike Lambert 15-21, 25-23, 18-16.
Walsh and May advanced to the finals after defeating Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan in the semifinals 21-12, 21-15.
McPeak and Youngs secured their spot in the finals after beating Lisa Arce and Leanne McSorley 21-18, 21-18.
Rogers and Scott arrived in the finals after coming through the contenders' bracket and defeating Jake Gibb and Adam Jewell 21-13, 21-14.
Kiraly and Lambert defeated newcomers Jason Ring and George Roumain earlier in the day 21-16, 21-18.
This was the second stop on the 2004 AVP Nissan Series. The tour continues next weekend at the AVP Nissan Series Austin Open April 30-May 2.
