USA women defeat Thailand as Haneef scores 30 points
One day after scoring a career-high 41 points, Tayyiba Haneef scored a match-high 30 points as the USA women's national volleyball team defeated Thailand, 3-1, Friday to advance to the fifth-place match of the Yeltsin Cup. Read on for the story.

One day after scoring a career-high 41 points, Tayyiba Haneef scored a match-high 30 points as the USA women's national volleyball team defeated Thailand, 3-1, Friday to advance to the fifth-place match of the Yeltsin Cup.
Haneef (Laguna Hills, Calif.) had 27 kills, two aces, one block and a hitting percentage of .420 as the United States posted a 21-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-22 victory.
Team USA will now play Turkey, a 3-1 winner over Croatia, for fifth-place in the tournament. At last year's first Olympic qualifier, the World Cup in Japan, the United States edged Turkey in five sets.
Haneef has scored 105 points on 92 kills, nine blocks and four aces in the United States' four Yeltsin Cup matches-an average of 26.25 points per match.
Outside hitter Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), making her first start of the season, scored 13 points on six kills, six service aces and one block as Team USA improved to 2-2 overall.
Jennifer Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) added eight points on five kills and three blocks, while Sarah Noriega (Ulysses, Kan.), Tracy Stalls (Arvada, Colo.) and 17-year-old Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.) chipped in with seven points apiece.
Team USA is playing without six of its regulars who have been playing professionally overseas-Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Nancy Metcalf (Hull, Iowa), Keba Phipps (Las Vegas, Nev.), Danielle Scott (Baton Rouge, La.), Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas) and Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah).
