Marcus Camby Nightmare for New York Knick's Family
The mother and two sisters of New York Knicks' star Marcus Camby were held hostage in their home by a knife-wielding deranged former boyfriend.
The details of the horrifying situation that played out in an affluent Hartford, Connecticut suburb during the early morning hours on Monday are still emerging. The suspect, Troy Crooms, a 28-year-old career criminal with a history of sexual assault, had been romantically linked to Camby's 21-year-old sister in the past. Police say that Croom entered the house some time before 3:30 AM on Monday morning and proceeded to the second-floor bedroom of his former girlfriend, where he began attacking her with a knife he had apparently taken from the Camby's kitchen. Police were called by the victim's older sister from a cell phone in her bedroom. It is not yet clear whether phone service in the area was down or whether Crooms had cut the phone lines upon entering the house.
Crooms repeatedly demanded to speak to the Knicks' star during the standoff and Marcus arrived as quickly as possible to help negotiators. Marcus stood in the driveway to the house so that Crooms could easily see him, but he did not speak to the suspect during the ordeal. While the suspect held Camby's youngest sister in another part of the house, the older sister and Camby's mother were able to escape unharmed. Although the details of the attack on Camby's sister have not been made public, Crooms was charged with burglary, first-degree sexual assault, assault, kidnapping, unlawful restraint and possession of a deadly weapon. He is currently being held on $500,000 bail pending a hearing today.
