The United States' troubles with Azerbaijan continued Wednesday afternoon. For the second straight year, Azerbaijan handed the USA women's national volleyball team a loss at the Yeltsin Cup tournament.
Azerbaijan, which defeated the Americans in the Yeltsin Cup bronze-medal match last year in five sets, emerged victorious on Wednesday in four sets (25-17, 25-15, 15-25, 25-22).
Team USA, which opened the season and the tournament with a 3-1 win over Croatia on Tuesday, fell to 1-1 in Pool B.
The United States wraps up pool play against long-time NORCECA rival and three-time defending Olympic gold medalist Cuba (2-0) on Thursday, April 22.
Cuba has already clinched the top spot in Pool B and a berth in the tournament semifinals. If the USA and Azerbaijan both win their respective matches on Thursday, the number two slot in the pool would go to the team with the best set differential. Team USA (4-4 sets won-sets lost) currently holds the edge over Azerbaijan (3-4), 1.0 to 0.75.
Following a travel day on Friday, April 23, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinal round in Ekaterinburg on Saturday, April 24, with the championship round scheduled for Sunday, April 25.
