USA women open 2004 season with victory over Croatia

The USA women's national volleyball team opened the 2004 season with a 3-1 win over Croatia at the Yeltsin Cup tournament Tuesday afternoon.
Team USA, which begins the year ranked No. 2 in the world, posted a 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory to begin play in Pool B. In other action Tuesday, Russia swept the Dominican Republic, Turkey edged Thailand, 3-2 and Cuba squared off against Azerbaijan.
Play continues on Wednesday, April 21 as the Americans face Azerbaijan in a rematch of last year's Yeltsin Cup bronze-medal match, won by Azerbaijan in five sets. Team USA then wraps up pool play against long-time NORCECA rival Cuba on Thursday, April 22.
Following a travel day on Friday, April 23, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinal round in Ekaterinburg on Saturday, April 24, with the championship round scheduled for Sunday, April 25.
