NFL: Moves continue as Patriots look to move up
The Patriots are trying hard and fast to move up to number two in the draft to select LaDainian Tomlinson from TCU.
The draft catchwords of this year’s draft are currently trades, rumors, and LaDainian Tomlinson. With that being said, there are at least two teams interested in the TCU running back that sit in front of the New England Patriots who select at number six. Sources have been stating for weeks that the Patriots would love to nab Tomlinson to repair their wounded running game.
However, moves have happened to alter the Patriots best-laid plans. Sources tell Fanstop.com that the Cleveland Browns have now made up their minds to select Tomlinson. If they do not take Tomlinson sources tell us that the Chargers will select the talented running back.
The Chargers traded their number one selection to the Atlanta Falcons after failing to work out a deal with perspective number one pick Michael Vick. The Chargers stated early on Friday that they traded down with the express intent of selecting the TCU running back.
However, sources shave stated to Fanstop.com that the Patriots have been on the phone since the Chargers made the deal looking to trade up to the number two spot to select the tailback. The Arizona Cardinals, who are projected to select a defensive player, currently hold the selection. Sources state that the Patriots are shopping their 1st and a pair of 4th round picks as perspective trade bait. Sources have not stated if the deal will be accepted; however one Patriots official told me that negotiations are “ongoing and positive.”
If Tomlinson were selected, he would join four other running backs in New England. However, none of those backs have had a 1,000-yard career season. Tomlinson rushed for 2,276 yards and 24 touchdowns in his senior season alone, which would make him the perfect fix for an ailing New England running game. Sources state that the Patriots will be trying to move up until the last minute to prevent the Chargers and Browns from gaining the services of Tomlinson.
Only time will tell if New England will be able to make the necessary offer to gain the number two overall selection.
