Formula One: Alonso Says Schumacher Will Never Move to Renault
Renault's Fernando Alonso has poured scorn on suggestions Michael Schumacher will replace him next year.
Fernando Alonso believes there is no way Michael Schumacher will replace him next year in the Renault formula one team as the French team will not be prepared to meet the Ferrari driver's reputed $30m (£16.8m) retainer.
"When I hear these rumours, I laugh," said the world champion shortly after arriving at Imola before Sunday's San Marino grand prix. "Knowing the team, knowing the bosses of the team and knowing Flavio Briatore [the team principal] I think it is absolutely impossible Michael will come here. Anyway, they wouldn't be able to pay him."
Alonso goes into the fourth round of the world championship with a 14-point lead in the drivers' table.
