Afro-Indian American

A poem about the realization that most African Americans are closely related to Native Americans…
my grandma told me stories of her mother's next of kin
a black haired, red skin women whose
ancestors wore buckskin
a lineage of people that laid claim quite rightfully
to what we call America
land of the brave, home of the free? (bullshit!)
vast nations of proud people that had lived here centuries
before the Vikings, Quakers or Columbus sailed the seas
experts of agriculture, conservation, birth control
they knew if we mistreat the earth
we jeopardize our soul
they had no need for bibles, churches, Jesus, saints or tithes
white guns, religion, greed and fear proved to be their demise
and when I track my heritage, I surely come to see
that I'm not only African....
there is Indian in me
