Restoration Work in France: Old and Historic Properties
For certain less conventional travelers to Europe, there are numerous stimulating opportunities for volunteer work renovating castles and other older monuments.
One such place is in the French Provence, and the people who handle these volunteer efforts are the group known as La Sabranenque. La Sabranenque offers charming provincial accommodations at a very reasonable price and locally-flavored meals in return for a relatively modest amount of volunteer restoration and renovation work, often at quite beautiful locations. The advantages of this type of holiday for the adventurous traveler are manifold. Firstly, there is the obvious opportunity to enjoy a budget holiday. At $550 for a two-week stay (including meals), the price clearly recommends it. However, the real reason to holiday in such a manner is precisely because it is something so unconventional and the travelers usually find themselves well off the beaten path, away from most tourists and tourist traps. This gives the traveler the opportunity to experience a side of France that they might not otherwise have such ready access to or be savvy enough to look into beforehand.
Add to these benefits the fact that many people enjoy taking part in the restorative efforts of the old and historic properties which La Sabranenque take upon themselves to renovate. Indeed, while vacationing in a location as charming as the French Provence clearly has its merits in and of itself, it is a rare holiday excursion in which the vacationers can so actively participate in the beautification of the landscape by which they find themselves surrounded. Of course, such travel is not for everyone, but it is little surprise that those who do partake in such adventures rave about their charming experiences in the French countryside.
