New Caledonia: The Native Culture and the French Colonial History
While named by the native Scotsman and explorer, James Cook, the islands of New Caledonia more so reflect the native culture and their French colonial history.
While getting to New Caledonia [situated east of Australia and north of New Zealand] is an adventure in and of itself, trekking through the islands and enjoying their rich beauty make the effort to get there a very worthwhile one. From French colonial architecture to native cuisine and history to stunning natural beauty, there are no shortages of ways in which the traveler can enjoy New Caledonia’s splendor. For those keen on history, there are numerous interesting museums which feature every variety of ancient native artifact and which outline the history, culture and traditions of the native Kanak people. If the traveler wishes, there are also many local (seafood-heavy) delicacies that also deserve attention. Rich and tasty, much of the local fare is very reasonably priced, even when enjoyed at more up-scale venues. Indeed, most everything in New Caledonia is very reasonably priced and, therefore, it is easy for the Western traveler to sample just about everything that this multi-island nation has to offer.
Of course, given its location in the South Pacific, New Caledonia boasts above all a glorious variety of natural treasures. Indeed, the inland portion of the islands are green and lush and the coastline is nothing short of spectacular. This is a country in which every manner of tropical outdoor activity can be enjoyed. Sailing, hiking, scuba-diving, mangrove exploring, fishing, sunbathing and other outdoor enjoyments are always at one’s fingertips while staying on the islands.
Indeed, the low cost of enjoying oneself in laid-back New Caledonia coupled with the rich array of activities and sights available on these islands makes it a truly special holiday destination.
