NCAA: Corruption at Duke University

Sunday night, at 7:35 p.m. several NCAA officials told the media that Mike Krzyzewski and Duke University illegally recruited one of their freshman players this season. While no details were told, there is speculation that this player was Duke guard, Chris Duhon. If this is the case, and the player that was recruited illegally, actually played in the tournament, Duke would have to forfeit the upcoming title game.

The NCAA held a small press conference. One official offered the statement, “After thorough research and investigations have been made, it is clear that Duke University was offering players large sums of money and gifts, for letters of intent.”

When asked what these accusations would mean for Monday night’s Championship game, he responded, “While no one wants to see the game forfeited, that is what might have to happen. However, we are looking into further options to prevent the game from being canceled totally.”

Some of those “options” might include having the most recent team that Duke beat, Maryland to fill in for the Blue Devils Monday night. Another option would be to reopen the tournament entirely, this is probably a long shot for obvious reasons.

The official said that they have not yet decided what other punishments Duke might receive. These punishments would almost definitely include returning all the money the university made from the tournament, and suspension from all tournament play. It is almost certainty that the freshman that was given money, will loose his scholarship and possibly banned from all NCAA athletics.

After the allegations were made, Mike Krzyzewski held a small meeting with his team around 8:15 p.m. All Duke officials and staff failed to comment.

This is a terrible day for college athletics. Duke University will have a black eye for a long time because of this terrible event. I am just hoping that the NCAA can somehow save the title game from being canceled all together. There is only one thing that is left to say:

April Fools.
