Sanrio and "Hello Kitty" - Modern Children’s Characters
The Japanese company, Sanrio, has given children around the world the beloved character "Hello Kitty", whose warm motto is "You can never have too many friends."
Sanrio has created a vast cyberspace playground for Hello Kitty enthusiasts of all ages, but of course, mainly for children. Children can find plenty of fun Hello Kitty games on-line and also, as one would expect, plenty of opportunities to avail themselves of Hello Kitty merchandise, which includes items as varied as Hello Kitty butcher knives and motor bikes. Nothing is too good for Hello Kitty fans and no merchandise too irreconcilable with the Hello Kitty image (yes, the butcher knife comes to mind!) to not consider making it available to children throughout the world.
Of course, the main thrust of the Hello Kitty on-line world is fun for children and the idea that "You can never have too many friends." For adults, much of Hello Kitty’s world - while clearly good, clean fun for children - is a touch bizarre, with Hello Kitty mutating into all sorts of interesting creatures, among other things.
However, much of the information and games at the Hello Kitty Web-sites are quite interesting and are no doubt quite fun for children. Songs, Hello Kitty e-mails and fantastic stories of Hello Kitty adventures abound at these sites and represent a fitting tribute to one of the most endearing (and enduring) of modern children’s characters.
