Electronic Dog Training Collars

A hot topic of debate for both dog trainers and dog lovers is the electronic dog training collar. Learn what they are and why it may or not be good for you and your dog.
Electronic dog training collars are a huge topic of discussion amongst many dog lovers and dog trainers. Lots of people ask if they are beneficial and if they are a product that a dog owner should use. The answer seems to be yes in most groups. The main thing that everyone can agree on is that if you are to employ an electronic dog training collar you should follow a handful of guidelines which we have listed them here.

An electronic dog training collar should not be used as a first line of training. If you have never tried to train your dog previously then regular training methods should be used first. The shock collars are only meant for dogs with behavioral problems which have not been able to be eliminated with traditional non-electronic training methods.

Use the electronic dog collars sparingly. We are not saying that you should not correct your puppy every time it makes an error; you should, but if they are having lots of difficulty cease training for the session or the day so that they are not getting shocked too many times.

Never use an electronic training dog collar to punish your puppy. The purpose of the electronic dog training collar is to teach the dog to be a better pet and companion, not to punish.

Lastly talk to a knowledgeable trainer and your veterinarian to find out if your dog would benefit from the use of an electronic dog collar.
