Mewes + Heroin = HBO Special
Actor Jason Mewes, best known as Jay of Jay and Silent Bob, turned himself in and pled guilty to six counts of violating his probation for a 1999 heroin conviction.
In 2001, Mewes failed to show up for court appearances stemming from a 1999 heroin conviction. An arrest warrant was issued by Freehold, New Jersey, Superior Court Judge Michael D. Farren. Mewes finally turned himself in to Freehold authorities on April 1. He brought a documentary film crew with him.
Mewes was originally pulled over in 1999 after police noticed his air bag was deployed and seeing Mewes attempting to hide a "metal package" in his girlfriend’s purse. A hypodermic needle was found in the container and a stash of heroin was found in his sock. Peter O’Mara, Mewes’ attorney, struck a deal with prosecutors that Mewes pled guilty to a reduced charge of possession of a controlled substance. His sentence included two years of probation, drug counseling and testing, 200 hours of community service, a $1,000 fine, and suspension of his driver’s license. He will be allowed to serve out his sentence in Los Angeles, where he will be able to continue with his acting as long as he shows up for his court dates in New Jersey.
Mewes hopes the documentary, titled Rock Bottom, will help "other people so they don’t fall into the same trap as he did." The HBO documentary will show Mewes using heroin and suffering withdrawal. The special will also show clips of his court dates and rehab sessions. His manager Craig Veytia is producing the special slated to air this summer. Maybe seeing the outcome of his drug use might help stop some dumb kid from embarking on a life of drug use, but there is bound to be some dumber kid who will only see the glamour of an addict’s life onscreen. Let’s just hope Mewes can kick his habit before he ends up dead.
