Hundreds of thousands of immigrants and their supporters took to the streets in more than 100 cities and towns across the United States yesterday, in rallies against legislation in Congress that would criminalise illegal migrants.
The day of action was part of a rising wave of protests by many of the 12 million illegal migrants living and working in the US, who have until now been a near-invisible labour force.
Senator Edward Kennedy said the so-called "immigrants' dignity" rallies were reminiscent of the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
