Five people died and 20 others were injured today after a truck loaded with natural gas crashed into a wall surrounding a synagogue in Tunisia, the north African country's official news agency reported.

The explosion on the Tunisian island of Djerba was an "accident", TAP news agency said. The driver of the lorry and four others were killed and several others suffered serious burns.

The ornate Ghriba synagogue in the popular tourist destination of Djerba is reported to be one of the oldest in Africa and is a pilgrimage site for Jews.

Tunisian security services and judicial authorities have opened an investigation to find the causes of the blast.

As tensions have escalated in the Middle East, synagogues in Europe, notably in France, have been targeted by arsonists.

Yesterday, a man threw a petrol bomb at a synagogue at Garges-les-Gonesse, northeast of Paris. A synagogue in the southern French city of Marseille was burned to the ground on March 31.
