Italian police have called on convents in northern Italy to help them search for four nuns involved in a hit-and-run accident.

The sisters crashed into the side of a Mercedes near the city of Bergamo after failing to heed a stop sign.

The driver, a 63-year-old shopkeeper, was shaken but not injured.

Witnesses were unable to note the registration number on the nuns' vehicle, which is believed to be a Citroën.

Police hope to identify it by examining fragments found at the scene. The sisters face a fine for failing to stop.

Police fear they may have slipped into a neighbouring province."In 25 years as a police officer, I have never seen anything like this," said Enzo Fiocchi, the police chief in charge of the case.
