Johnny Depp: 'Blow' May Have Crossed the Line
Promoters of the new Johnny Depp film, 'Blow,' have been distributing souvenir "cocaine mirrors" at advanced screenings of the movie.
Much to the dismay of many moviegoers and fans of Hollywood in general, promoters for the recently-released movie 'Blow' have decided to hand out small rectangular mirrors to patrons as souvenirs. The mirrors come with a small rubber case and have the 'Blow' movie logo on them. Critics of the decision to distribute what amounts to drug paraphernalia (small mirrors such as these are the surface of choice for drug dealers and users who are cutting cocaine) are saying that New Line Cinema is sending a terrible message to young movie fans. By distributing the mirrors, it seems that New Line's promotion people are attempting to glamorize cocaine use and are treating the "golden years" of the U.S.-Colombian cocaine trade with a sort of misguided nostalgia.
Representatives for New Line Cinema have defended their decision to distribute the mirrors and have stated that over 1,000 have already been given out. "Anyone who sees 'Blow' recognizes that this highly acclaimed film does not promote or glorify the use of drugs," said Steve Elzer, senior vice president of New Line Cinema's corporate communications. 'Blow' recounts the real-life rise and fall of drug dealer George Jung, who during the 1970s became one of the first Americans to import cocaine into the U.S. on a large scale.
