Patriotism: Is it Dead?
I’d like to think that we live our lives well. I’d really like to think so! But looking at the umpteen number of deaths taking place, I wish we would ‘live’, because all these incidents only make me this that we are merely existing!
The Facts
There are several reasons for me to believe that we exist. There are even more reasons to believe that we are existing; for the sake of existing. Women being raped, children being brutally massacred, children creating shootouts on innocent unknown kids for no reason at all; makes me shudder to think so! Nobody needs to force down patriotism down your throat but no one expected some patches of the country to suffer in the manner that they have. We all grow up to be sensible people, with our own respective rationalities intact. It’s really a pity that we fight over petty issues, issues that really are petty if you go to think about it. While being born on earth is anyways a great responsibility to shoulder, facing these issues are no less unimportant.
Death of Humanity
It really is a pity that whenever faced with the most plebian situations, our first reaction to it is more or less skeptical. I don’t want to blame anyone in this regard; it’s just that the winds of change did bring in some change in areas of technology and science. It’s sad to notice that we don’t trust anyone anymore. We grew up recognizing our national leaders, whoever they may be. Today our newer generations grow up despising them. It’s a forgone fact that elections are the time when votes, people, and even souls are bought.
Men in power seem to make the maximum use of their roles. I recently read about a friend who, after migrating to another country wrote to me ’informing me about the perils in my own country. Now, it’s not that I am a die-hard loyalist of any sort, but I prodded him on just so that I could know his views. He said that my country was economically poor, was scattered with leaders who were unjust and a country, which could never see the light of the day, in terms of being economically stable! I simply smiled. Although it did enrage me a wee bit that my country was being unnecessarily assaulted, I came to realize that men and women because of the instances that have occurred in the past are so caught up in their work (of making ends meet!, well most of them!) that there is just no time for us to get back and retaliate. It’s not that we don’t want to, but we can only if we can solve our battles in the same breath. When we speak about another country being good, and ours being inferior, let’s for once think about our roles and responsibilities too.
Sure I may not aspire to be a politician, but politics is not the arena where I could spread a smile across while walking down the street. I may not be a national leader to speak a few words to make that physically challenged person feel a lot better than he currently is feeling. Patriotism doesn’t mean only an undying love for your country. For me it also means to make this world a better place to live in by doing things that I can, and in my own little way. I don’t need people to cast their votes for me for doing so. I also don’t need to put on a political façade for this!
All I need to do is to make one person happy each day; and as kindness begets kindness, I am sure there may be millions to follow suit! And with countries that already have so many people out there, with so many different mindsets, it is possible for me and you to make a start somewhere, and make a difference by living in a nation; and a world that truly is a better place to live in! Amen to that!!
