Alleged Franco Paintings Withdrawn From Auction
Three oils purportedly painted by the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco have been withdrawn from an auction after a lawyer for his family said they could not have been his work.
"We have withdrawn the works from sale, which we think is the right thing to do given the opinion of the family," Ramón García, director of the Seville-based Arte, Información y Gestión auctioneers, said yesterday.
He said they had believed the vendor, whose father was given the paintings as a gift from the Franco family. The father had always insisted the paintings were by Franco.
