Division II Basketball.

Before last weekend, the mere thought of it would cause me boredom. However, that was before I had the chance to go and watch the Division II Girls Basketball championship game between the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux and the Cal Poly-Pomona Broncos.

When I got there, I didn’t know what quality of play to expect, based on the fact that I had very little exposure to Division II athletics. But let me tell you, it was quite a game!

Those girls played awesome!! What began as a game where all seemed to be going right for the Sioux, who started the game going out on a huge run and didn’t allow points until a few minutes into the first half, would slowly unravel.

As the game progressed, Cal Poly-Pomona started getting better and better. Like a prize fighter who stays on his feet, the Broncos managed to keep themselves in the game. Until finally, they emerged victorious in overtime! WOW!

Now, this shocked the crowd based on the fact that I would say 80% of them were rooting for the Fighting Sioux.

This majority made themselves known before the game had even tipped-off. During the "Star-Spangled Banner," a local choir was interrupted as they were singing "…. the land of the free and the home of the…. "SIOUX!" interjected the UND cheering section.

Coming into this game, I had no preconceived favorite, nor did I know much of anything about either side. However, this made it interesting for me to watch, and allowed me to assume the role of a "neutral fan."

Although the names may not be as familiar to you as Lisa Leslie, or Rebecca Lobo, a basketball game such as this is something that should not be missed!

This game was highly enjoyable, and I would like this to be a lesson to all my readers, don’t judge a book by its cover, and be sure to check out a Division II Girls Basketball game, because plain and simple:

These girls got game.
