Rugby Union: Wales Set Their Sights on Davies

Leeds director of Rugby, Phil Davies, has become the WRU's latest target to succeed Mike Ruddock.
Phil Davies, director of rugby at Leeds, has emerged as the Welsh Rugby Union's preferred candidate to succeed Mike Ruddock as head coach of the national side.

A meeting of the WRU board of directors was brought forward by 24 hours and held last night, though no decision was made, but the original deadline of April 7 for applications has been removed from the advertisement on the union's website. Davies, a former Wales and Llanelli captain, is believed to have been interviewed this week.

The WRU had set up a five-man panel to sift through applications and recommend Ruddock's successor, but it is planning to move more quickly than it originally intended. The popular choice in Wales to succeed Ruddock is Llanelli Scarlets' director of rugby Gareth Jenkins.
