Athlete's Journal - -Life of a college athlete
The Spring season in college soccer is a time to get your touch back and gain individual skills over a four game time period. There will be tactics involved, but the first practice will be running, and then just playing some important short-sided games.
Athlete Journal -- Spring season -- Entry #1: Friday, March 28, 2003
Franklin and Marshall's men's soccer coach Dan Wagner has set up our Fridays so that we will use the last hour of our spring practice to play short-sided games in a league setting.
This league will be made up of four teams, with one of the teams being our seniors who are about graduate. They will be playing with us throughout this league.
This will be the last hour of practice today, however, with the first part being spent running what is known as the "beep-test."
The "beep-test" is a test of endurance and speed all at once. While trying to get from one line to other (about 20 yards apart) by beating the beeps on a machine, which starts off slow, but towards the end, a player with good endurance will do very well.
Sunday we are going to run our long distance run.
Instead of the traditional Cooper test (2 miles in 12 minutes), we will be running one and a half miles, trying to finish in under 8:30.
This will be an interesting test of endurance, and due to the quick speed in which each lap needs to be run, it is a run designed much better for soccer players than the Cooper.
If you live in the Northeast, enjoy the spring weather that we have been given. Snow will probably be back with us soon, so maybe go out and try a beep test of your own in the nice sunny days -- and pray for no rain.
