Bush leads tributes to Moynihan

Daniel Moynihan, the only American politician to have served four successive presidents in senior posts, has died, aged 76, after complications following a ruptured appendix.

The charismatic and cultured former New York senator and UN ambassador was admitted to hospital on March 10 and contracted an infection and pneumonia after the removal of his appendix. He died in Washington on Wednesday.

President George Bush paid tribute yesterday, describing him as an "intellectual pioneer" who "committed his life to service".

His successor in the Senate, Hillary Clinton, described him as a "great American". The former New York mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, called him "one of our nation's most eloquent voices in the quest for a more civil society" and "the very example of what a statesman should be".

Moynihan served in the Senate from 1977 to 2001 and worked for presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth, three children and two grandchildren. He will be buried at Arlington national cemetery.
