Devonish Fails to Make 200m Final
Commonwealth Games: Britain has no representative in the 200m final for the first time since 1966 - a year when Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell narrowly missed out by finishing fifth in his semi-final.
Marlon Devonish missed out on a place in the 200 metres final at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne today.
Devonish, a member of Britain's Olympic gold medal relay team in Athens, could only finish sixth in his semi-final in a time of 20.93 seconds.
With Darren Campbell disqualified from the heats, and England team-mate Chris Lambert and Wales' Christian Malcolm injured, it means Britain has no representative in the final for the first time since 1966 - a year when Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell narrowly missed out by finishing fifth in his semi-final.
"That was over 220 yards, it was not even in metres. It just makes it sink in a bit more how crap it is," admitted Devonish, who was eighth in the 100m final.
"In the quarter-final I had cramp in my left leg and I couldn't pull it back. I got the bad luck of the draw and got lane one for the semi and put myself under pressure. It knocked my confidence, it might have been in my head that I was going to get cramp again.
"I wasn't fazed by the opposition, I don't think they are superior to me whatsoever. I've still got the relay so it's not all over. That's my main objective now."
England's Julie Pratt had earlier qualified for the final of the 100m hurdles as one of the fastest losers from the two semi-finals. Northern Ireland's Zoe Brown and English pair Kate Dennison and Ellie Spain also qualified for the pole vault final.
