A woman in Austria pleaded guilty to murdering four of her babies at the start of her trial yesterday.

The case follows the discovery of the bodies of two newborns in a basement freezer of a block of flats in southern Austria and two more babies entombed in buckets filled with cement.

Tests showed that the infants were alive when put in the freezer, wrapped in plastic bags. The woman, 33, who cannot be named, denied killing a fifth child, despite testimony by neighbours of a further pregnancy.

Her partner, 39, denied charges of killing four of the children and claims he was unaware of the pregnancies.
