Boxing: Two very different fights

A review of Saturday's boxing action, which saw Shane Mosley battle Ronald Wright in the main event, while Joe Mesi faced off against Vassily Jirov on the undercard.
The main event last Saturday evening was an enthralling match-up, featuring two renowned professionals from the sport of boxing, Ronald "Winky" Wright and "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

This was always going to be a tactical affair, which most people felt would be close, how wrong they all were.

From start to finish this fight was dominated by the southpaw, Wright. Although Mosley had his moments, he just couldn't do anything to stop the determined Wright.

The judges were unanimous in their decision, Dave Moretti and Chuck Giampa scored it 117-111, while Paul Smith had it 116-112.

This throws Mosley's plans of a mega fight with Felix "Tito" Trinidad out of the window.

On the undercard we saw rising heavyweight superstar "Baby" Joe Mesi win a close 10 round decision over Vassily Jirov.

Mesi took control of this fight from the start, using his superior strength and power.

After eight rounds, it seemed that this fight was a formality until Jirov dropped Mesi in the ninth with a right to the back of his head.

Jirov charged at Mesi in the 10th, putting him down twice, Mesi just managed to survive.

The judges were all unanimous in their decision's of 94-93.

This fight does nothing to answer the question of whether Mesi can handle the big boys.

He was in big trouble with a blown up cruiserweight, and now it seems will no longer be seen as the heir to Lennox Lewis' throne.
