Endangered Species: Making a Difference For Extinction and Preservation of Endangered Species
As a changing environment affects animals and habitats, motivated people can mean the difference between extinction and preservation for endangered species.
The National Wildlife Federation notes that an endangered species faces the possibility of extinction because of low population numbers. Threatened species, which are not as at-risk as endangered species, also face a population dearth, but are not yet considered to be in immediate danger.
Efforts abound to save animal species of both classifications, with some activists noting an equal right among all animals, and not just humans, to share the earth. Still others note that much of the damage done to animals and animal species is the direct or indirect result of human progress and feel that humans should take it upon themselves to counteract these negative effects. Such progress, financial, technological, or other, sometimes interferes with the habitat of a given animal species or with the food chain.
The role that humans play in saving animal species, regardless of motivation, varies greatly. Some species can simply be left alone or the specific human-produced threat removed. In other cases, a much more active role is necessary. Such measures may include breeding centers, and legislation to protect animals.
For those interested in endangered or threatened species, and in helping to save them, the Web is an incredible resource. Conducting research on some of the sites dedicated to the subject of endangered species is a first stop toward actively contributing to the well being of animals. Some sites have special children’s sections that can foster a love of animals and the environment from a young age.
