Stephen King Biography
Biography of America's one of the most successful writer Stephen King, who is also known as 'Master of Horror'.
Stephen Edwin King was born on 21 September 1947, in Portland Maine to Donald Edwin King and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. Stephen had an elder brother David whom Donald and Ruth king had adopted two years before the birth of Stephen King. Stephen King's family was a perfectly normal family and they were living an average life, until, one night Donald King left home for a walk and cigarette and never turned up again.
After his father's mysterious disappearance, Stephen's mother took on the responsibility of both the brothers and their house. They (Stephen, David and Ruth) shifted their home from one state to another before finally coming back to Durham near 1958, Maine, on a request from Ruth's sister to take care of their parent's. Ruth's relative provided her financial help to support her family and her parents. After the death of her parents, Ruth took on a job in a facility for the Mentally Challenged. Stephen and his elder brother David decided to start a local newspaper "Dave's Rag", to help their mother in running house (which was the first time when Stephen wrote something).
Further, in 1962 when Stephen was about 15 years of age, he attended the Lisbon High School in Lisbon, Maine. When at the High School in 1963, Stephen together with his friend Chris Chesley published their first book of collection of short stories 'People, places and Things - VOL I' and in next two years he published a two part book that he had written ('The Star Invaders'). In 1965, first time in his life, Stephen got a chance to actually publish his story in a magazine called 'Comic Review'. In that magazine, his story 'I Was A Teenage Grave Robber' was published. In year 1966, Stephen King completed his graduation and took on a Scholarship for further study at the University of Maine.
When at the University of Maine, Stephen wrote his first Novel, which was rejected by Bennett Cerf (Random House). After rejection from Bennett, Stephen was very depressed and he even tore away the novel, which he had written. Further in 1970, Stephen graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelors Degree (in English). He was now an authorized teacher to teach English subject at high school. Immediately after graduation, Stephen tried to write another novel, which he couldn't complete because of the lack of finances he was facing.
In 1971, Stephen married Tabitha Spruce, whom he had met at Fogler Library when they were students at University of Maine. Prior getting a job of a teacher, Stephen worked as a laborer at an industrial laundry and also wrote short stories for the magazine of men for few dollars. Further, Stephen got a job of English teacher at Hampden Academy in the fall of 1971. Stephen then continued his writing work after the classes at evening and he wrote many short stories, articles and a novel in next three years and finally, his latest novel 'Carrie' was accepted by Doubleday & Company in 1973 (which was published in 1974). Further, from 1973 to 1982, Stephen wrote numerous novels and short stories and articles as well which were read and liked by many. Stephen developed his own strategy to grab the reader's interest and he specialized in it (such as thriller and horror). He is even called 'Master of Horror'.
In year 1982, Stephen made his debut in the world of movies. In his debut, he directed and wrote screenplay for the movie 'Maximum Overdrive' which was based on his own short story 'Trucks'. Stephen King has become one of the most renowned writers in the world and his novels, short stories and movies etc. were successful in attracting all type of readers/viewers. His novels were published in more than 30 languages in countries all over the world. Today, millions of copies of his novels are in publication all over the world.
Stephen chose to stay in his home at Bangor, Maine along with his wife. In June 1999, a truck hit Stephen and he was severely injured in that accident. After his condition improved, he bought the truck that hit him to crush it by his own hands on the anniversary of the accident. In 1999, it was revealed that Stephen was suffering from incurable Macular Degeneration (which may lead to blindness).
Stephen King has many achievements on his name, one of which is the completion of his novel 'The Running Man' (which has over 300 pages) just in ten days, Stephen King owns three Radio Stations in Maine. He is certified by the book of world records 'Guinness Superlatives' for the motion picture adoptions, his short story 'The Man In The Black Suit' was honored with O. Henry Award in 1996, Stephen not only wrote novels and short stories, he also entered the field of movies, he directed a movie, wrote screenplay for a couple of movies and also acted in few. These and many more, during his lifetime Stephen won many prizes and also hearts of millions of readers all over the world.
