Chen Enrages Beijing By Axing Unification Council
Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-bian, headed for fresh confrontation with Beijing yesterday by scrapping a government body set up to oversee the island's eventual unification with the Chinese mainland.
He said the National Unification Council was redundant because the future of Taiwan should be decided by its people. Beijing, which says that any attempt to declare formal independence for Taiwan will be treated as an act of war, gave warning of a "serious crisis". American officials are also said to have advised Mr. Chen against increasing cross-strait tension.
