USC's Williams makes jump to NFL

The floodgates are now open for underclassmen to enter the NFL draft. USC's monster receiver is "Movin' on Up."
According to published reports from ESPN.com, it appears that USC's Mike Williams (6-5, 230) will enter this years NFL draft.

The Trojans' sophomore, who comes from Tampa, Florida, has elected to turn pro as a result of the Maurice Clarrett decision.

He leaves the "Men of Troy" with excellent statistics. In two collegiate seasons, he compiled 176 catches, 2,570 yards, and 30 touchdowns.

Williams has stated that his decision to leave and go to the NFL was not based on money, but on the fear of potential injury.

He is now under the criticism of the Trojan nation.

What more could he do?

His stats are very comparable to Larry Fitzgerald, who, in the past two seasons has compiled stats of 161 receptions, 2,677 yards and 34 touchdowns.

As far as competition, Williams has played against more formidable opponents.

In two seasons, he has been the consistent receiver who has helped USC win two Pac-10 championships and a national championship in 2003.

Williams clearly has played a significant role in bringing the USC football program back to the top.

His game is similar to former USC and current NFL player Keyshawn Johnson, though his critics say that he lacks the explosiveness that some receivers have.

Does he have the speed to burn NFL cornerbacks?

As far as size and weight, he is a mismatch for any opposing cornerback.

He also has a great knack for going up and getting the football at its highest point, which separates him from the crowd of receivers in the draft this year.

Fans across the nation are split on the Clarrett ruling.

On one hand, NFL followers are worried young, immature football players are going to enter and will be unprepared for the tedious 16 week season. These young men seem to be fueled by their ego.

On the other hand, people see Clarrett as a pioneer and choose to hail him as a worker's movement leader.

We will soon find out how they will react to professional football.

In addition, this is a great draft year for wide receivers.

Roy Williams, Reggie Williams, Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Clayton, Lee Evans and now, Mike Williams, all are extremely talented.

However, some will find more success than others.

Depending on the team that drafts them, game plans, and other variables, it is hard to determine the impact these guys will have at the next level.

It certainly will be an interesting draft and 2004 NFL season.
