David and Victoria Beckham are expecting their second child in September, it was announced yesterday - sparking an unprecedented level of interest in the celebrity couple's recent travel arrangements.

Their son Brooklyn, born in March 1999, was said to have been named after the New York borough where he was conceived and there was speculation last night that the Beckhams would choose to continue the tradition.

Victoria, 26, has made no secret of her wish to have more children, but was understood to have been putting off such plans in order to concentrate on her solo music career.

"Brooklyn is really looking forward to having a little brother or sister to play with. This has been such an exciting year for us - England are in the World Cup finals, Victoria's had a second top 10 hit and now we are expecting a new baby. It's fantastic," the Beckhams said in a statement.

Victoria's manager, John Glover, said last night: "It is wonderful news. Victoria will be continuing with her work and we are planning the promotion of her third single."

The England player's father Ted, 53, who lives in Chingford, east London, said: "I have not spoken to David yet but it's brilliant news if it's true. It would be lovely to have a brother or sister for Brooklyn."
