The City of Copenhagen
Copenhagen is the capital of the oldest kingdom in the world - Denmark. It is situated in the island of Zealand and is the largest city in Scandinavia. Denmark’s population is that of 5.3 million people, of which more than a million reside in its capital. Thanks to immigration in the past and in present days, Copenhagen is a multicultural center.
The fact of how Copenhagen transformed from a small fishing village, that hardly anyone had ever heard of, to the dazzling capital of the Danish Empire, is quite interesting. In the past the city was called "Havn" meaning the Harbor. It was of little strategic or political importance and most of the people in "Havn" earned their daily bread by fishing. Eventually, through the centuries, fishing and trading turned the small village into a flourishing town.
In 1343 King Valdemar Atterdag made Copenhagen the capital of Denmark, which in present day is the hometown of the Danish royal family. Right in the centre of the city are the four royal palaces of which Amalienborg is the residence of Queen Margrethe II.
Denmark’s parliament is based in Copenhagen as well. It is a one-chamber parliament called the 'Folketing' consisting of 179 members, of which approximately 30% of the members are female.
As far as architecture goes, one main attraction is The Øresund Bridge, which opened up for traffic in July 2000. It is unique because it connects two countries, Denmark and Sweden. For more than a hundred years these countries have wanted to create a fixed link between Malmø and Copenhagen but it has just recently become possible for this to actually happen. The bridge can be crossed by car or the Øresund-train, which will lead to the former Danish town Malmø in less than 20 minutes!
Copenhagen is a great city for sightseeing. Whether strolling along the cobbled squares and narrow streets, admiring old buildings or along the largest square in the city - Copenhagen City Hall Square, which holds 50.000 people or more- you will most probably be amused.
If you want to be amused even more you can visit Tivoli Gardens, which is one of the world's most famous amusement parks. It opened up its gates in 1843. It has everything from merry-go-rounds to theatres and gourmet-dining and is right in the heart of Copenhagen.
Another main attraction would be The Copenhagen Opera House. It is one of the worlds most modern and appreciated opera houses, almost as special in its features as The Sydney Opera House, which was built by a Dane as well.
The Little Mermaid sitting at Langelinie in Copenhagen, is one of Denmark's biggest tourist attractions as well. The sculpture was erected in 1913, and has since then been the symbol of Denmark. It is one of the most photographed statues in the world. The fairy tale of The Little Mermaid written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837 is another Danish deed. Disney later produced the movie, and Copenhagen maintains the statue in her honor.
Apart from sightseeing, Copenhagen is great for shopping. Besides offering great classic shopping the Danes are famous for their range of quality designed clothes, furniture, glasswares, ceramics and jewelry.
After enjoying all these things one can easily find a nice place to dine. Whether it be traditional or world cuisine, Copenhagen has it all - from bars to cafes to night clubs.
As one can see Copenhagen is full of life. It is definitely a place with things to do and see. Whether you are more traditional and enjoy quiet walks and sightseeing or young and wanting to explore the nightlife of it all. This would definitely be the place to be, when you’re yearning to see, when you’re yearning to be free, Copenhagen is the place to be.
