Murray Moves Into World's Top 50

Tennis: Andrew Murray's debut ATP Tour victory has moved him up to 47th in the world rankings, just behind Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.
Andrew Murray’s debut ATP Tour victory has moved him into the world’s top 50 for the first time.

The 18-year-old Scot moved up 13 places to 47th in the latest rankings after beating third seed Lleyton Hewitt 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 to land the SAP Open in San Jose yesterday, having beaten top seed Andy Roddick in the semis.

Murray needed three match points to subdue Hewitt, but played a terrific tiebreak, winning it 7-3 when he blasted a backhand crosscourt winner to become the youngest Briton in the Open era to capture an ATP title.

On sealing victory, he yelled out, pumped his fist and wrapped himself in a British flag given to him by a fan.

"This is perfect," Murray admitted afterwards. "I played solid all week. It’s been the best week of my life."

It was his second ATP Tour final after losing to world number one Roger Federer in Bangkok last October.

Murray is now in sight of Greg Rusedski (43) and Tim Henman (40) in the battle to be the sport’s top-ranked Briton.
