Eminem (Marshall Mathers) to Test New Image with Elton John
Marshall Mathers, a.k.a. Eminem, is scheduled to perform and create quite a stir with Elton John at the Grammy Awards ceremony.
In response to growing and widespread criticism about the violent lyrics he directs toward the gay community, Eminem will take the stage with Elton John at the Grammys. Although Eminem claims that the graphic and violent lyrics in his songs that attack homosexuals and homosexuality are "only jokes," the performer has consistently drawn the ire of the gay community. The planned performance with The Rocket Man is intended to ease some of the sharp criticisms and protests that have targeted the white rapper since the record-breaking success of The Marshall Mathers LP.
Not immune from the criticism, however, has been Elton John himself, an openly gay performer who has championed the causes of the gay community and supported issues affecting homosexuals, such as AIDS awareness and civil rights. Many in the gay community believe that Elton is "selling out" by performing with Eminem, attempting perhaps to penetrate Eminem's market, which primarily include rebellious adolescent males.
One could also put forth a rather persuasive argument for the potential good that could result from such an unusual performance pairing taking place on a global stage. The world will surely be watching these two icons perform together, and even the dullest minds will be incapable of escaping the simple message of harmony and acceptance. And that's good, because the dullest minds seem to be the problem anyway.
