Pats win Super Bowl nail-biter 32-29
eSports Sinista1 gives his review of the game, and reminds those that the party begins on Tuesday.
For second time in three years Beantown gets to celebrate a Super Bowl Championship, and tonight a celebration is rightfully so...
As I write this article the newscasters have just broken in to show shots of Brooklie and Kenmore Sq. Where idiotic fans are raising hell, flipping cars, and lighting fire. This is the type of crap that puts a black eye on good things, probably disgruntled Red Sox fans.
Once again the Pats win a Super Bowl in movie fashion, and by the leg of K Adam Vinatieri, who missed his first FG and had his second attempt blocked. This poor guy will never be able to leave New England, an with the 41 yarder he kicked with eight seconds left almost completely erases all of the FGs he missed this year in regulation. Bottom line... Adam makes the ones that matter.
On Saturday morning I spoke with Chris Russell on his radio show and made a prediction that the game would be 21-10 Pats, and it would also be a knockdown, dragdown, smashmouth football game. Well, for two quarters I was right, as both defenses played to their strengths, and abused the WR's.
WR Troy Brown felt the wrath early with what looked like a broken and bloody nose after DE Mike Rucker dropped an unintentional knee right through his face mask and onto the bridge of Brown's nose.
Jesus, now it's getting bad... A car has driven into a crowd of people in front of Northeastern University. What the hell is wrong with these people?
The Patriots and Panthers played one hell of a game despite some key errors on defense, offense and from my perspective coaching.
Bill Belichick vs. John Fox: These two former defensive co-ordinators coached the first quarter of this game on a conservative level trying not to show everything all at once. But once the leashes were let go the fun began, and if I had to say where Fox lost this game on a coaching level it would have to be going for the two point conversions twice in the fourth with 12:44 and 7:04 minutes left, and not getting good coverage on the Pats WR's. Belichick's crew came out on top because they mixed it up keeping Fox's crew guessing.
Offenses: MVP QB Tom "Cool Hand" Brady (32/48 for 354 and rushed for 12 on two carries) was on point for most of the night despite the pick he through in the end zone, and Panther's QB Jake Delhomme (16/33 for 323 yds) will probably be on quite a few fantasy rosters next year as he proved could throw the ball when the Pats had shut down Stephan Davis' (13/49 yds) running-game assault that had carried the Panthers through the playoffs.
The Panthers WR corps abused the Pats secondary opposite Ty Law, as Mushin Muhammad pulled down four passes for 140 yards, Steve Smith had four for 80 yards, Ricky Proehl went four for 71 yards and former Patriots TE Jermaine Wiggins had two for 21 yards, with a key conversion.
The Pats did just the same with Deion Branch getting 10 receptions for 143 yards, Troy Brown pulling down eight for 76 yards, David Givens getting five for 69 yards, Daniel Graham going four for 46 yards. However, the key TD reception was made by LB Mike Vrabel in the fourth quarter from one yard out.
The Pats running game was an argument to what I have been trying to say all season about how you don't need one exclusive back in the NFL to win games because tonight the Pats RB's Antowain Smith (26/83 yds) and Kevin Faulk (6/42 yds)combined for 125 yards.
The difference between the two offenses was the timing of the penalties. The Pats had their share, but Carolina made some penalties at the worst time of the game.
Defenses: If you're looking for CB Ty Law (5 tackles) stats on passes defended or interceptions, stop looking because Delhomme and the Panthers game plan kept the ball from Ty's side of the field almost all night. And where was CB Ricky Manning all night? He had six tackles, but other than that... Nada. Before he got hurt S Rodney Harrison had nine tackles and one sack, Willie McGinest (4t/1 sack), Roman Phifer (5t), and Tedy Bruschi (4t).
The Panthers defense harassed Brady at times, but never got the sack.
Special Teams: Both squads gained some good ground on returns, but the deciding factor game down to the performance of the punters and kickers. Pats' P Ken Walter should be gone next year after two of his punts landed and bounced backwards. The Panthers' Todd Sauerbaun was consistent, but the nail in the coffin was K John Kasay's botched kick that went out of bounds with 1:08 left to go in the game. This allowed the Pats to set up a drive from the 40 to a FG win.
So can we say the "D" word now?
Before I drop this piece, I have to give some shouts because I attended Ramiro's Super Birthday Bowl at the Kowloon in Saugus with some great people Sunday night despite the fact I had some last minute changes.
First off, I'd like to thank Melissa from JAMN' 94.5 morning crew for hooking me up at the last minute. Her fiance Trevor who almost put on a better halftime show until Janet Jackson's breast popped out. Ramiro, Bobby Blaze, and cutie-pies, Sara and Pebbles.
My man Syurus from MTV's "Real World: Boston" showed up, and after chatting with him was told to keep a lookout for his clothing line -- Clash Inc. Clothing a soon to be web site Clash INC Clothing. I had expected his buddy CT for "Real World: Paris" to be around, but he was no where to be found. For those of you who want to chat with Syrus he'll be at The Rack Monday night.
I also checked in with Boston Celtics G Marcus Banks who was in attendance enjoying the night off. There would be no basketball talk here tonight.
I'd also like to give a friendly shout to Kevin Gomes and his girlfriend, Kristi Marcott, who I spoke with most of the night.
Who would have thought that we would have had a season more magical than what we had two years ago? Vince McMahon of the WWE would love to have scriptwriters think of stuff like this. The Pats are coming home champions once again, and the party begins on Tuesday.
