NFL: Ray Lewis Looked 'Super' Once Again
Once again, Ray Lewis showed why he was named the defensive player of the year, and named Super Bowl XXXV MVP.
Like him or not, Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens, is the best defensive player in the NFL today. Lewis showed that on the field Sunday against the NY Giants in Super Bowl XXXV, as he and his team won the Super Bowl trophy and he won the MVP title.
Just one year ago, Ray Lewis was charged with a double murder and now he’s a Super Bowl Champion and the MVP in the biggest game of the year. Lewis pleaded guilty to an obstruction of justice charge at the end of the Super Bowl last season, and had to pay a fine. Lewis missed no preseason or regular season games this year. Now, Lewis is the first middle linebacker ever to win the MVP trophy in Super Bowl history.
During the regular season, Lewis put up some astounding numbers. In 16 regular season games, Lewis led the Ravens in tackles with 137, 108 of them solo, three sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. These numbers pretty much explain why he was named the defensive player of the year.
During the post season, Lewis also had incredible numbers. In four post season games, Lewis had 31 tackles, 21 of them solo, one fumble recovery and two interceptions in which one of them he returned for a touchdown.
The Ravens’ defense has played at a high level all season long. The big reason why the defense has played so well, is the play and leadership of Ray Lewis. Lewis plays like a man on a mission when he is on the football field. Everywhere you look, there is Lewis making a tackle or very close to it. The Ravens’ defense set a team record giving up an NFL low 165 points in a 16 game regular season. In the post season, the Ravens’ defense has only given up a total of 23 points in four games. Those four games included giving up only three points to Denver, 10 points to Tennessee, three points to Oakland, and seven points to the NY Giants.
It’s simply amazing when you look back and see what Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Raven’s defense has done this past season. However, good things must come to an end. As we speak now, defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis may be headed to a head-coaching job in Buffalo. Add that to the upcoming loss of some key defensive players, due to the salary cap requirements and things will change a little bit in the offseason for the Baltimore Ravens. In the new era of football, NFL teams can no longer keep key players for extended period of years. One thing for sure, though, is that the best defensive player and Super Bowl XXXV MVP will be the center of this Ravens’ defense for years and years to come. And Lewis should get all the credit that he so well deserves.
