"Gladiator" Throws Competition to Lions
The Roman Empire-era movie "Gladiator," has received 12 Oscar nominations, including best picture, best actor for Russell Crowe, and best director.Following up in a close second place was the Chinese-language film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," which received 10 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best foreign film, which is only the third time in the history of the Oscars that a film has been nominated in both of those categories.
Also nominated for best picture were "Erin Brockovich," for which Julia Roberts was also nominate for best actress, "Traffic," and "Chocolat." Another interesting note is that "Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic" director Steven Soderbergh was the first to be nominated for best director for two films in the same year since Michael Curtiz in 1938.
While Crowe's nomination for best actor is one of 12 for "Gladiator," Tom Hanks figures to have a leg up on that award for his role in "Cast Away," in which he played a man stranded on an island, by himself, for many years.
