Now is the time for the playoffs
With the dominating performance of Kansas State over number one Oklahoma on Saturday night, the NCAA should consider a playoff system to decide its champion. Don't leave it up to computers. Let the players decide.
There is no way Oklahoma should be in the Nokia Sugar Bowl.
Kansas State could be considered the most influential team the NCAA has ever seen, as their domination of Oklahoma on Saturday night proved that a playoff is needed.
Oklahoma lost to Kansas State 35-7. Yes, the number one team lost by four touchdowns and were humiliated in front of a prime time football audience of fans and coaches.
LSU and USC should play in the Nokia Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana. If they do not, then the system used to determine the number one team in the country is severely flawed.
Oklahoma did not even win the Big XII conference championship. Nor did they even put up a fight in the title game, so why do they deserve a shot at the national title?
If you can't get up for your conference championship game, then what can you get up for?
K-State was ranked 15th in the country and their quarterback, Ell Roberson threw for four touchdowns, while their running back, Darren Sproles ran for over 200 yards against the number one team in the country.
Even Michigan with two losses has just as much right to be in the Sugar Bowl as Oklahoma does. The Wolverines played their unofficial Big Ten championship game against a then ranked number two Ohio State and won fairly easily.
With two losses, they do not deserve to go to New Orleans, but when the time came to play the team they needed to beat, Michigan did it. Oklahoma did not.
So, when are we going to see a playoff?
It better be as soon as possible. The BCS people have been very fortunate over the last several years because there has always been a true top team or top two teams, until now.
The championship should be decided on the field, not by computer geeks or coaches who have biases.
Why do we have to discuss who may be in the BCS bowl games? Get a playoff system to decide who is number one.
At press time, the BCS has not decided who will play in the Sugar Bowl.
In fact, since the computers do not take into account how many points a team may win by, Oklahoma will probably remain number one and play in the Sugar Bowl even though they got crushed in their own conference title game.
Oklahoma fans must admit that the performance by so-called Heisman Trophy candidate Jason White and the defense should take them right out of the NCAA championship game.
If either USC or LSU is taken out of the Sugar Bowl, the championship game will be a joke.
Everyone thought that Oklahoma was unbeatable, as they played fantastic throughout the year. However, they could not finish.
Is there anyone out there who is sick and tired of not having a playoff for a championship? If there is, why?
Maybe the NFL should just pick their two top teams and let them go to the Super Bowl, or the NCAA basketball people should just pick the two teams at the end of the year who are one and two and let them play one game for the championship?
Forget the NCAA basketball tournament and the Final Four, let the computers decide.
If the football people in the NCAA decide that a playoff is necessary, this will be bigger than the Final Four or even the Super Bowl. The money will be there, the bowl games can still be used and, best of all, a real champion will be crowned by the teams playing on the field.
Thank you, Kansas State. You may be the reason that a playoff will come about.
We should thank Oklahoma, too. Getting beat is not a disgrace, but getting embarrassed by Kansas State in your conference title game showed why you should not play in the NCAA championship game.
The Sooners should be ranked number three at best, but if they are higher, the fans will be clamoring for a playoff.
Come on, NCAA, do the right thing. Let the players on the field decide who is number one, just you let them do in every other sport.
