Self-healing Car Paint to Smooth Over Life's Scrapes

A Japanese carmaker has unveiled a new transparent bodywork paint that heals itself after scratches and scrapes.

Scratch Guard Coat, which was developed by the Nissan and Nippon Paint, contains a high-density elastic resin that refills minor cuts created by a prang, fingernails or a vandal's key.

The healing process takes anything from a day to a week, but apparently works quicker in warmer temperatures.

Benefits will be felt most by drivers who regularly visit the car wash, the most common cause of minor scratches, says Nissan. The paint will be sold initially in Japan.
