Co-Op Buying Program Launched For Animal Shelters

by Sherry Morse

Pet Savers Foundation has entered into an agreement with several companies to provide discount prices on their products to humane organizations who have signed up for the Pet Savers Co-op buying program.

The program features free membership and there are no minimum order requirements for the organizations that join. Most of the companies involved in the program also offer shipping discounts or free shipping for products purchased through the program.

The program includes an opportunity to purchase pharmaceuticals from Henry Scheim which supplies many shelters and veterinarians; training crates and kennel cages from both General Cages and Midwest Cages; and collars and leashes from American Leather Specialties - which sells both leather and nylon products.

Groups that are interested in participating in the program can sign up by contacting Pet Savers at a toll-free number. Once they have signed up the group receives an information kit that features catalogs and pricing on available products.

Besides offering discounts to participating groups, Midwest Cages has also started a fundraising program to give each organization a $3 rebate for every cage that the organization sells at their site.

Rick Collord of the southwest Washington Humane Society, which is participating in the program, said, "We were spending anywhere from 44 to 87 percent more for supplies we now purchase through the Pet Savers program."

The Pet Savers Foundation says its purpose is to promote and advance the humane treatment of homeless animals to improve their quality of life. To do this, the foundation has several national programs to support America's humane community.

In addition to the Co-op buying program Pet Savers also offers SPAY/USA, a nationwide referral service for affordable spay/neuter services to help reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs in the United States.
