Gonzaga Basketball -- The good, the bad and the ugly
The Zags ran over the Washington Huskies, 86-62, in a blowout win at Seattle. Here is some insight -- the good, bad and the ugly -- into the game.
The Good: The Zags played a match up zone for most of the game and the Huskies simply could not shoot. The Huskies only made 19 of 61 shots in the game for a paltry 31.1%.
Blake Stepp scored 14 points (6 of 11 from the field) and dished out seven assists.
The real sparkplug in this game was Kyle Bankhead. He was a perfect four for four from the field (he hit his only three ball), and added five rebounds and two steals.
Richard Fox came off the bench and contributed nine points and 14 rebounds.
Ronny Turiaf and Cory Violette had 12 and 15 points respectively, and they were solid in the paint.
The Bad: Four players off of the bench played less than 10 minutes in the game.
While this game was over at halftime, the bottom four players did not see the floor until the last few minutes.
The substitution pattern employed by Coach Few has been hard to figure out of late.
Some players have been sick with the flu the last week, so that could be part of it.
I suppose I shouldn't question the decisions of a coach whose record at Gonzaga is 109-30. I guess he probably knows what he is doing.
The Ugly: The Zags are now 4-1, with their only loss coming on the road to a highly ranked team, St. Joseph's.
I find it hard to believe that this team is not ranked higher in the polls.
With all of the pre-season hype, you would think that people were finally giving this school the respect they deserve, yet the coaches poll last week did not even list Gonzaga.
Next on the list of tough road games is Maryland on Saturday at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C.
