Eric Daze -- Top Gun on the Chicago Blackhawks

He's just coming off his second surgery for a herniated disc, but that hasn't stopped the Blackhawks left winger Eric Daze from scoring.
Eric Daze, left winger for the Chicago Blackhawks, grew up in Montreal, Canada, where his favorite team was the hometown Canadiens, and his favorite players were Bobby Smith and Patrick Roy.

One of Daze's greatest moments as a Blackhawk was when he scored a goal in the old Montreal Forum.

While some of his Chicago teammates were representing Canada in the 2002 Olympics, Daze was getting married to his long time girlfriend, Guylaine. They now live together along with their pet dog, Max.

I spoke to Eric after the Blackhawks-Kings game this past Saturday night, November 30, which Chicago lost 4-1.

When he's not shooting pucks into the net, Daze told me he enjoys watching television and reading French novels. Reading French novels comes naturally when your name is Daze, which is pronounced the French way, Dah-zay.

Right now, one of the television shows he can't miss is "Survivor."

Speaking of surviving, Daze "survived" not one, but two surgeries to repair a herniated disc in his back.

The first surgery occurred during the 1999-2000 hockey season, and he missed the last 18 games of the regular season.

His latest hernia surgery occurred during the preseason. He told me this time, the disc was on the left side of his back, not the right. (Ouch! Just hearing him describe the pain to his back and the surgery sounded painful enough to me.)

Eric credits his current coach, Bryan Sutter of the famous Sutter hockey clan, as the coach that he's learned the most from. (For those of you kind of new to hockey, the Sutter brothers, all six of them, played in the NHL. They're sort of like hockey's version of the Boone family in baseball.)

With the loss of long time Blackhawk, Tony Amonte, to the Phoenix Coyotes, I asked Eric if it has this hurt the team.

He said not really because the "Hawks still have a lot of good players to pick up the slack."

One would think after just getting back from surgery, a player would want to relax and take it easy.

Taking it easy was never an option for Daze, and Chicago Blackhawks' fans wouldn't want it any other way.
