Top 25 Football Rankings -- Final 2001 Rankings

High school football has crowned all of its state champions. Check out who the first eSports Media Group National Champion is.
The final high school football games have been played (not counting all-star games).

This final poll will list the top 80 teams in the country and will officially crown the first eSports Media Group High School Football National Champion.

The top 80 teams will not just be a re-ranking of the top teams in each region, as the South Region has more than 20 teams worth consideration for the final poll.

In Georgia, Parkview won the AAAAA championship in a battle over Warner Robins Northside, but not without controversy. Parkview was leading 12-7 with 5:02 left in the game. Northside was in the midst of an impressive sustained drive that saw the Eagles at the Parkview 25. Then a bank of lights went out, causing a delay. When the teams came back to the field, the momentum Northside had gained had all but dissipated. Northside eventually fumbled, then muffed a punt return with two minutes left and Parkview held on for a 12-7 win.

In Texas, Lufkin made a case for being one of the top teams in Texas as they knocked off Austin Westlake 38-24 in the Class 5A Division II championship. Although stud quarterback Reggie McNeal completed just 6-for-20 passes, the completions went for a total of 226 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 18-yard run with seven minutes left in the game and totaled 157 yards rushing. Ennis won the 4A Division II title 21-0 over Bay City.

In the North Carolina 3A championship, Crest, the only team to beat fourth-ranked Independence over the past two seasons, was upset by Winston-Salem Parkland 27-21.

And last but not least, a hearty congratulations goes out to the eSports Media Group 2001 Champions, the Spartans of De La Salle High School in Concord, California.

And now here are the final high school football rankings for 2001:

1. De La Salle, Concord, CA (12-0) Season complete. CIF North Coast Section Class 4A Champions. 2001 eSports Media Group National Champions. The Spartans' winning streak is now at a national-record 125 games after knocking off San Leandro 48-13 for the section title.

6. Neshaminy, Langhorne, PA (15-0) Season complete. Pennsylvania AAAA Champions. Won state title with a 21-7 victory over former Top 5 Woodland Hills. 7. Blue Springs, Blue Springs, MO (14-0) Season complete. Missouri Class 5A State Champions. Won championship 28-12 over Hazelwood East out of St. Louis. Darius Witherspoon was the ringleader of an awesome defense that set a state record with 16 sacks in the championship game.

Parkview is the first school in 21 years to win back-to-back titles in the state's largest division.

9. Northside, Warner Robins, GA (13-1) Season complete. Georgia Class AAAAA Runners-Up. The Eagles seemed to pretty much be snakebitten in their championship game against Parkview. Chansi Stuckey ran for 135 yards and one touchdown, but was only able to complete 5-for-9 passes for 42 yards.

The offense scored 764 points, an average of 50.9 per game.

28. Poly Prep, Brooklyn, NY (8-0) Season complete. 40. McNary, Keizer, OR (13-1) Season complete. Oregon Class 4A Champions. McNary recovered from an early close loss to South Salem to destroy the Oregon 4A bracket. On the way to the title, they knocked off a two-seed (Roseburg), then a one-seed (Portland Jesuit), followed by a six-seed (Lake Oswego, who had not lost a game on the field) and finally a four-seed (Sheldon). The championship game was a 35-10 win over Sheldon.

43. Woodland Hills, Pittsburgh, PA (14-1) Season complete. Pennsylvania Class AAAA Runners-Up. Lost title game 21-7 to sixth-ranked Neshaminy in a quagmire at Hershey Park Stadium. The Wolverines also lost a lot of firepower when quarterback Steve Breaston went down late in the first half with an ankle injury and Woodland Hills clinging to a 7-6 lead. The Wolverines couldn't muster much offense without their leader.

44. Ryan, Denton, TX (15-0) Season complete. Texas Class 4A Division I champions. Their first ever state title was punctuated by a wild 42-35 overtime win over Smithson Valley. Junior quarterback James Battle threw for over 3,000 yards and 38 touchdowns and will be one of the top ten quarterbacks in the country next season.

45. St. Thomas Aquinas, Ft. Lauderdale, FL (14-1) Season complete. Florida Class 4A Runners-Up. STA lost the title game 28-20 to Tallahassee Lincoln. QB Dan Shula, the grandson of former Miami Dolphins' coach Don Shula, threw for a school record 316 yards in the loss. Shula's 4.65 GPA will likely allow him to attend an Ivy League school to play his college ball. Shula's father David graduated from Dartmouth and they seem to be the frontrunner for the younger Shula's services.

46. Rockledge, Rockledge, FL (14-1) Season complete. Florida Class 3A Champions. Rockledge ended the longest winning streak in Florida, the 47-game winning streak of Glades Central. Putnam North quarterback Matt Warren threw for a state-record 3,585 yards this season.

49. Eagle, Eagle, ID (12-0) Season complete. Idaho Class 5A Champions. Eagle won the title despite three playoff rematches with teams they had beaten during the regular season. The Mustangs knocked off Lewiston, Capital, and Pocatello Highland on the way to the title, winning the championship game 41-35.

50. Hart, Newhall, CA (13-0) Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division III Champions. Hart won their fourth straight title with a 42-13 blowout of Valencia. Matt Moore, a senior, threw for 3,332 yards and 33 touchdowns for the season.

56. Strath Haven, Wallingford, PA (14-1) Season complete. Pennsylvania Class AAA Runners-Up. Strath Haven proved that it is very difficult to beat a team three times in a row in losing to West Allegheny in the state title game 28-13. Quarterback Dan Miller performed admirably all season long despite his inexperience and was helped by Notre Dame recruit Josh Hannum, one of the best wideouts in Pennsylvania.

57. Manheim Central, Manheim, PA (13-1) Season complete. Pennsylvania Class AAA Semifinalist. Manheim Central lost their only game of the season 14-13 to Strath Haven in the AAA semifinals. Cumberland Valley briefly tied the game before Neshaminy won the game.

Morris had a chance to tie the game late, but a defensive stand by Joliet Catholic preserved the game.

66. Rock Springs, Rock Springs, WY (11-0) Season complete. Wyoming Class 5A Champions. Rock Springs won the state title with a 22-19 win over Campbell County, the second time in 2001 the Tigers had defeated the Camels. The Bombers were crushed in the title game against St. Ignatius and had to pull a miracle comeback to beat them the first time they played in 2001. However, St. Xavier was still one win away from their first-ever state title.
