Steven Spielberg in Close Encounter with Neighbors
Much to the dismay of area residents, Steven Spielberg is planning to construct a huge horse arena for Kate Capshaw.
Acclaimed director Steven Spielberg is embarking on his latest crusade to forever change the Hollywood landscape, but this time his focus is far from the big screen. Spielberg has recently announced plans to construct a huge five-story horse-riding ring, intended to be a gift to his wife, Kate Capshaw. The proposed structure is already drawing the fire of concerned property owners in the area and some of the residents have retained the services of an attorney to protect the sanctity of the land surrounding their homes. John Murdock, the attorney representing six local residents, has referred to Spielberg’s plans as "astounding and obnoxious." He continued, saying "they're cutting out half the hillside to put in this riding ring...the structure is completely alien to the area."
The five-story behemoth will include a retractable dome roof, underground stables for the horses, and will cover some 27,000 square feet of land. The cost of the project is uncertain, but estimates have been rumored to be in the $7 million range, which does not include the nearly $3 million that the super director paid for the property.
Although his neighbors have expressed their distaste for the "Spielberg Corral," the most formidable opposition may be in the form of the zoning commission that must grant six variances in order for the project to move forward as it is currently planned. A hearing on the zoning issues is planned for January 4, but Spielberg can appeal any ruling to an area planning commission and, ultimately, the City Council.
