Trappers Push Pro-Trapping Postage Stamp
by ANC Staff and In Defense of Animals
Animal lovers in America are sounding the alarm about a proposed 'pro-trapping' postage stamp currently under consideration by the U.S. Postal Service.
According to animal advocates, The National Trappers Association (NTA) is pushing the stamp. If the NTA goes forward with its campaign to institute the pro-trapping stamp, the trappers will inundate the Postal Service with vocal requests for these stamps.
Each year approximately 10 million animals are trapped in the wild, so that they can be skinned for fur coats. The primary tools used by fur trappers are the leghold trap, the body grip (Conibear) trap, and the wire snare.
'In Defense of Animals' (IDA - www.idausa.org) has launched a public letter writing campaign to ask the U.S. Postal Service to say no to the proposed pro-trapping stamp.
"Volumes of documentation prove that leghold traps mutilate wild animals, are nonselective in what they catch, and are a danger to companion animals and children. This is not something to be promoted on a stamp," IDA stated in a recent press release announcing the campaign.
Concerned individuals can contact the national Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (at: U.S. Postal Service, 475 L'Enfant Plaza, SW; Room 5670, Washington, D.C. 20260-2437) and ask them to deny any protrapping stamp requested by the NTA, pointing out that the U.S. Postal Service should not promote animal cruelty.
